Healthcare Gaps shorten Health Span of Patients significantly, especially for Women

In this blog post, we look at one of the biggest problems in healthcare – inequality in healthcare.

  • 64% of medical interventions disadvantage women.
  • 10% of medical interventions disadvantage men.
  • 26% of medical interventions achieve equal outcomes.
  • 25% of women’s lives are spent in poor health. The health gap for women is 75 million years of life lost due to illness or premature death per year. This equates to 7 days per woman per year of additional health burden.

Women live longer than men. This statement is well known in society. On average, women live 82.4 years and men 77.2 years. The reason for this lies in the riskier lifestyle of men – driving fast, being overweight and not attending preventive check-ups. [1]

But women live 25% of their lives in poor health. The health gap for women is 75 million years of life lost due to illness or early death per year. This equates to 7 days per woman per year of additional health burden. [2]

Practising gender-specific medicine as the norm in healthcare can close the care gap and help up to 3.9 billion women and 600 million men. [2]

If the female health gap is closed, 137 million women could have the opportunity to work full-time. This offers the opportunity for women to escape poverty and provide for themselves and their families independently. [2]

Takeaway points:

  • Problem: Only 26% of medical interventions achieve equal outcomes for both genders.
  • Solution: Gender-specific medicine can close the health care gap and could help millions of people.
